In my first design-a-thon, I partnered with a classmate to develop an app that helps university students discover and practice self-care strategies and inspires a supportive community. In forty-eight hours, I researched our problem space, surveyed university students, created a medium-fidelity prototype on Figma and filmed a pitch of our solution. Our project, Thrive was selected as a top 5 finalist for the Most Innovative Solution out of 40 submissions.

With the limited timeline of this project, we decided to focus our target audience to first year university students. To discover how these students perceive self-care, we sent out a survey using Google Forms and collected over 30 responses from UXL Design-a-thon participants and friends.

Using the results from our survey and information gathered through secondary research we developed an affinity map to better understand why university students struggle with maintaining self-care and identify the root causes of frustration.

With these insights into the lives of our users and a better understanding of the problem space we defined our problem statement.
