Role: Product Management and UX Design

Team: Flight Deck Innovation - Product Team

Duration: Sept 2022 - Dec 2022

Location: Communitech Hub, Kitchener, ON

In Fall 2022, I joined The Flight Deck Innovation Lab as a Junior Product Manager for Dispatch, a flight admin and mission planning software that is digitally transforming processes within The Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF). During my internship, I helped launch 3 projects, initiated a design system and visited 19 Wing Comox, an Air Force base for user-empathy initiatives.

Problem

From “football” sized packages of paperwork (literally 150+ pages) to accessing databases that are “buggy, unmaintained, and have a big learning curve” it was time for a change.

Solution

In May 2019, Dispatch came into agile development as a step towards digital transformation within the Air Force. This software helps streamline flight admin and plan operations such as aircraft handling, fuelling, customs, itineraries, and crew lists. And improves data accessibility.

Single-handedly reducing the amount of time, energy and effort spent on obsolete tasks, enhancing the workflow of 6,000+ Air Force personnel and supporting national air defence.

“Before the advent of this new software, it was extremely time consuming to copy down all of the amendments by hand, or sift through dozens of emails for the correct information,” ****

“What’s great is that it’s all centralized, available after hours, and easily updated when we travel – I’m not calling home to Trenton at 2 a.m. and copying information by hand.”

Building a Foundation

Understanding the Infrastructure

First, I dove right into learning about the Air Force, the ins and outs of Dispatch, key stakeholders and understanding the hierarchy, systems and processes that exist in the organization.
